What Happens in Lagos Stays in Lagos: Life After Detty December

The Detty December season has concluded, days after planning, strategizing, and the announcement of the biggest season in Lagos and across other parts of Nigeria has been put on a shelf. Everyone has resumed their respective duties, and the I Just Got Back (IJGB) merchants have returned to the various countries from which they came. They've attended concerts organized by some of Nigeria's major entertainers, gone to the beach in Lagos State, and have been able to reconnect with long-lost friends and family members.

Since the turn of the 2020s, the Detty December celebration officially gained prominence, becoming one of the most voraciously anticipated periods of the year. The season prompted several Nigerians to return home for the holidays and enjoy some of the country's finest offerings, from nightlife to musical events and other cultural activities that can only be found in the most populous black nation in the world.

A lot of Nigerians and their acquaintances visit the country for various reasons; some come to have fun, while others are there to find their better half. More often than not, people find their better half during their visit back home; other times, things do not turn out well. This is the narration of a love story gone sour.

Let's Meet in December

On a weekend in April 2025, Toyosi was surfing social media like every other 21st-century youth when she came across the profile of a young man named Oluwanifemi on the photo-sharing app, Instagram. Toyosi was bedazzled almost instantly. She fell in love, or so she thought to herself, who can blame her?

Oluwanifemi is a good-looking chap who resides in Woolwich, London. On his IG page, Femi had several photos of his luxurious life in the United Kingdom, flaunting his palatial apartment and impeccable vehicle. The young man was fly, and his Instagram oozed class, elegance, and exuded the aura of a man who has gathered his life together. Simply put, Femi was doing very well for himself; he looked the part, and his lifestyle fit the role he was displaying to the public via social media.

Toyosi, who resides in Agbowa, Ikorodu, wanted to be a part of Femi's ethereal reality. She fell in love instantly and was prepared to risk it by delving into his DMs; however, she needed to think before expressing how she felt. 

To make her presence known to Femi, Toyosi liked every one of his photos from as far back as 2022. Femi didn't react immediately. Several days afterwards, he went through her Instagram profile to see who was developing a crush on him. Fascinated by her appearance, he followed her without liking any of her photos back.

For those who don't know, Toyosi was a beautiful woman in her own right. Standing tall on 5'll with an impeccable physique, her beauty is easy on the eyes, and it charms those who care to stare for too long. Hence, she was able to captivate Femi almost immediately.

Days after both of them engaged in their respective actions, they went on recess until one night, Femi texted Toyosi on IG, "How many times do you hear you're beautiful per day?" he texted.  Toyosi didn't respond immediately; however, she responded the following morning with a laughing emoji. Fair enough, it was the beginning of their beautiful affair, or so it seems.

As the days went by, their conversation transcended from Instagram to WhatsApp, where they engaged in deep conversations daily. Toyosi slowly began to distance herself from her boyfriend, Anthony, who resides in Lagos state with her. Femi had become her addiction, and she was looking forward to meeting him in December. 

All Things Get Detty...

Toyosi and Femi spoke every day. As a matter of fact, the young lady ended her relationship with Anthony just several weeks after she started having a discussion with Femski. Anthony was done dirty, he was broken, and his heart was left shattered by the vicious action taken by the love of his life, Toyosi. He begged and pleaded with her to reconsider their relationship. It's a dangerous business throwing away three years of togetherness and love; however, Toyosi didn't care anymore. She is in love with her newfound abroad lover, Femski. 

Anthony stayed up late at night, wondering why his once sweet 'Toto' no longer wanted to have anything to do with him. She no longer picks up his calls with much excitement, that's if she ever picks up at all. Her texts on WhatsApp have become colder than a frozen turkey. It was time for him to let go and focus on other aspects of his life.

A Pretty Detty December

After months of discussing online, Toyosi and Femski would be seeing each other for the first time in December. Femski was bringing himself, finesse, and a bag of funds, while Toyosi was unapologetically preparing to jam Femi with her banging body. Toyosi dreamt about this moment, as Femi, who is here to see how dirty his sheets could get.

Femi arrived in Lagos, and he secured an apartment in Lekki, located in the Southeastern part of Lagos state. He booked the Airbnb apartment for one month, for himself and the love of his life. On the first night of their meeting, both were excited about their respective appearances. Femi even looked finer in person than his Instagram page; meanwhile, Toyosi exuded a scintillating scent from the pores of her skin.

Both newfound lovers were just adorable. The first night was intriguing; after many months of anticipating their debut coitus, it was intense and worth the wait. From showers to the kitchen and apartment corridor, Femi and Toyosi couldn't get enough of each other; they were in their respective skins. While Toyosi and Femi were bonding while creating worthwhile memories, Anthony, Toyosi's estranged lover, was still looking for ways to get them back together, dialling her phone all night and sending multiple text messages. As expected, Toyosi didn't flinch and was experiencing all that she had always desired.

While Anthony was promising a better life, Toyosi's new lover, Femski, was taking her to beautiful places across Nigeria. Gifting her brand new wigs, an iPhone, taking her shopping, and giving her hefty cash at every given opportunity. Femi simply gave Toyosi the life that she had always desired, and mentioned to her that he would prepare to bring her to London in due season.

Like everything else in life, good things come to an end. Finally, the holiday season was over, and it was time for Femi to return to London. In the moment of bidding farewell, Toyosi decided to get pregnant for Femi. 

Perhaps, she didn't strategize this properly. Toyosi intended to keep his baby so that she could give Femski a reason to always be connected with her and possibly return to Nigeria next time. She thought she wasn't enough and wanted to have a child to further legitimize their relationship.

Upon returning to London, Toyosi and Femi kept in touch, at least, for the first couple of weeks. The affair was promising and didn't seem to be a fling; however, things would change drastically after Toyosi mentioned to Femi that she was pregnant with his child. Femi didn't react negatively to Toyosi's announcement; he accepted her disclosure and remained calm until one morning in February, when Toyosi realized she had been blocked across various social media platforms, such as Instagram and WhatsApp.

Femi never left her a breakup note nor did he propel a storm, he accepted that the detty December euphoria was over, and it was time for him to readjust to his life in the UK. Whatever happened in Lagos must stay in Lagos. Femski enjoyed detty December courtesy of Toyosi; however, he isn't looking to build a family with her in the foreseeable future. 

Toyosi tried reaching out to Femi several times, all to no avail. Femski never introduced her to any member of his family, nor did she become acquainted with his friends; he was all she knew, and he left her after the festive season. Eventually, Toyosi reconciled with her estranged partner, Anthony, and they became a couple once again.
