YouTube is one of the most used social media platforms where individuals from various spectrums of life can share knowledge with their viewers. Before the turn of the decade, YouTube was a place known for watching music videos from your favourite artists and listening to movie reviews and recommendations.

It was a platform where erudite individuals who had knowledge about a topic or subject matter divulged authority unapologetically. At the time, knowledge was power; things have since changed drastically.

For a while, the objective of YouTube was simple- watch music videos, to entertain and acquire knowledge (could be in the field of STEM, Driving, culinary skills, etc. However, things are cyclical, and everything in life evolves. A new generation has emerged since YouTube was created in 2005. Two decades later, the video-sharing platform has found a way to make a profession out of their hobby and do what enthralled them as a child.

While some content is mind-blowing, fascinating, and worthwhile, others are underwhelming, banal, and excruciatingly boring. Some creatives are desperate- desperate for attention, desperate for validation, and desperate for the ‘Almighty money’! Hence, information overload and production of shambolic content are almost inevitable due to the pursuit of attaining purpose and meaning.

There is just too much content to consume on the internet. On TikTok, to Instagram, Snapchat down to Youtube. Too much of everything leads to information overload. Too much of everything isn’t ideal, and the human mind isn’t designed to process excessive information within a short timeframe- this is the battle of the 21st-century human being.

You want to watch a beginner’s video on Product Design or tutorials on the basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) suddenly, the latest episode of Layi Wasabi’s skit pops up. You click on it, then the suggestion menu brings up other content creators that you admire and enjoy watching. On the video-sharing platform such as YouTube, there is information overload, and the users often suffer from the fear of missing out (FOMO).

Everyone these days has a cellphone, it could either be an Android or an Apple product, it doesn’t matter, you have access to the internet. Oftentimes, social media users enter a black hole where they consume so much content without actually being aware of this. Scrolling from one comedy video to another, listening to a self-development podcast without actual plans to do the work. The tragic life of the 21st-century youth.

Users consume so much content on YouTube and other social media platforms that they begin to suffer from decision paralysis, reduced focus and productivity, confusion, and eventually, the lack of fulfillment of purpose in life or other spectrums of human lives. To control or curb information overload, do the following:

-        Prioritize: Focus on the important video.

-       Limit Input: You don’t have to subscribe to every channel or platform on YouTube. There will always be more content on YouTube. If it doesn’t affect or wouldn’t influence your life in any way, put it aside.

-       Practice Digital Minimalism: Focus on those who bring actual value to you and endeavour to spend less time on your phone.

-         Take Breaks: Simply put, take time away from your screens regularly.
