Good Parenting: Understanding How Food Affects Your Mental Health (See Photos)

At the recent Mental Health program organized by the African and African-Europeans Association (AFAES) on Friday, November 28, we discussed various topics such as the mental well-being of an immigrant, good parenting, and we ate a healthy meal.

Mental health is one of the most pivotal discussions in the modern world, and AFAES has been devising various methodologies on how Nigerians, Africans, and other immigrants can approach this topic with utmost understanding. AFAES is strategically building a community that would help immigrants to understand that they are not alone in raising their kids in a society such as Finland.

Puff puff at the event

At the recent mental health forum, Ibrahim Sonmez, a psychological counselor, served as the moderator at the event. He gave in-depth insights on how to build a family in Finland and various ways that immigrants could learn and establish themselves in a new society, such as Finland and other Scandinavian countries.

While Somnez served as the moderator, the expertise of Sirkku Terava, a senior social worker and child welfare expert, Anna Hopper, and Terhi Solasaari, both pediatric doctors, helped to inform the audience about how children can integrate into a new environment, such as Finland. Understanding that learning a new language and weather conditions can be tedious, the speakers explained various ways that social workers work with immigrant parents.

Speaking during the session, the moderators mentioned that immigrant parents must understand their children and be compassionate with them, regardless of age, emotional intelligence and sometimes, generational differences.

Further, they mentioned that it is pivotal for parents to contact social workers and establish a relationship with them.
